How Do You Naya? Facebook Fan Leah Graves

When deciding who to interview for this week’s How Do You Naya blog post, we thought, who better to hear from than one of our dedicated and enthusiastic Naya fans?

One fan in particular, Leah Graves, proved to be a real Naya aficionado — she was even one of ten lucky Facebook fans to win a free pair of Naya Shoes during the 10 for 10 Challenge!

Leah represents the Naya brand in many ways, especially in her dedication to living an environmentally conscious lifestyle (her home is completely solar powered)! We also loved hearing about her recent trip to Iceland, and how her Naya Shoes held up perfectly on those chilly nights out!

How did you first discover Naya?

I first discovered the brand while working for a friend’s design firm called The Zen Kitchen. I was doing a lot of research about eco-friendly brands and started to learn more about Naya (right when Naya first launched). I always admired the shoes online and purchased my first pair from Nordstrom.

What do you love about Naya shoes?

I love the materials Naya uses to make the shoes. Also, I have trouble finding heels for work. I travel often and need something comfortable for conferences, trade shows and meetings. I also work with college students so I’m not looking for your typical boring black pumps. I really like the marketing and branding Naya uses and their overall corporate mission. It’s hard to find a company these days that stays true to their mission and roots. I believe Naya does this well.

How do you like to relax?

I spend a lot of time in Maine. I enjoy kayaking, hiking, snowshoeing, and cross country skiing. My favorite type of day is a snow day – a day that I don’t have to work and can spend time in the woods. For me, spending a day out in nature with my husband and our friends is incredibly relaxing. I live a hectic urban life and I try to get into the country and fresh air as much as I can!

How do you help soften your footprint on our earth?

My husband and I built an off-the-grid solar powered home in 2003. The build took five years and we spent a lot of time sweeping aside sawdust to blow up the air mattress to sleep at night after a whole day spent working on the house. The home is 100 percent wind and solar-powered. Our appliances run on propane and they are extremely energy efficient.

I also volunteer at a local farm to teach farm education to children and families. I’ve been doing this type of volunteer work for over a decade now!

What is your favorite drink to help you relax?

Hot chocolate! I also enjoy whole leaf teas while at work. I like slowing down with a cup of tea after lunch.

Fill in the blank: I love to wear my Naya shoes with _________ and _________.

A dress and tights!

Do you have a favorite song that helps you renew yourself?

‘A Little Bit Stronger’ by Sara Evans.

Do you participate in any outdoor activities that renew your mind, body or spirit?

I think taking the time daily to walk outdoors is very important. One of my favorite summer activities is to relax in a lawn chair by the lake in Maine and read. I could be out there all day with just a book, a sun hat and an iced tea.

What is your favorite Naya shoe and why?

The Cailin – I wear them to all my work events!  I sport heavy boots to winter events and change when I get there. I just tuck the boots under the trade show booth; slip on my Cailins, and voila!

What to Wear Wednesday: Winter Resort Escape

This time of year, almost nothing sounds better than escaping to a warm and exotic destination. Not only will you beat the winter blues and soak up some Vitamin D, you’ll also get a chance to debut those fabulous new resort trends. So trade in your cozy sweater for shorts and sunglasses because this week’s What to Wear Wednesday look is perfect for all you jetsetters!

The versatility of the Kasha bootie makes it a great investment piece, transitioning from fall to spring with ease. With its lace-up detailing and neutral color, this bootie looks great with shorts — we love this rich brown pair by La Blanca available at Nordstrom.com. It can be a bit tricky to pull off this combination, so it’s important to choose a heel that can maintain a relaxed look with just a touch of glamour.

We topped it off with a gorgeous blouse by Elie Tahari available at Dillards.com. Whether it’s a poolside brunch or a day at the beach, this top is perfect. The detailing on the sleeves and neckline create a unique and fun vacation look. Not to mention, the color is sure to highlight your new tan.

When packing your suitcase, make sure to remember a fun, bright nail color to showcase through those peep-toes. We love Butter LONDON Nail Lacquer in Jaffa, a pretty coral that looks lovely with the browns in the outfit. Butter LONDON is available at Nordstrom.com.

Last but definitely not least, add a pair of sunglasses to block those bright rays. Ray-Ban aviators, available at Nordstrom.com, are effortlessly cool, and we love the tortoise shell. Now grab the sunscreen and swimsuits, it’s time for some relaxation!

How Do You Naya? Caring for your Winter Boots

The cold weather can take quite a toll on your lovely leather and supple suede this winter season! Take a few small precautions that will help you save your shoes for next season and keep them looking their best.

Prevent damage by weather proofing your shoes. Before going out in wet weather for the first time, spray your new shoes with a water-repellant coating that works on suede and leather. Be proactive to keep your winter shoes and boots looking great through next season!

Say goodbye to salt lines. Road salt is great for keeping us safe on icy roads but wreaks havoc on our shoes. A homemade solution of equal parts white vinegar and water will do the trick. Dab the mixture on your leather shoes then wipe off with a clean, wet rag. Buff dry with a soft, clean towel and presto! Salt-free shoes.

Take extra care with suede. Avoid wet leather cleaning methods on your suede shoes! They need to stay dry so they don’t lose their texture. Instead, rub off dirt right when you come inside with a kneadable eraser or sand away obvious stains with an emery board. If your suede has become flattened with moisture, scrub with a dry toothbrush.

What to Wear Wednesday: New Year, New Look

We celebrated the holidays in style, and now that we’ve had our fill of confetti and champagne, it’s time to return to the normal routine. No matter what your schedule looks like this year, why not make it your most fashionable year yet? Start 2012 off on the right foot with this week’s What to Wear Wednesday ensemble.

Begin with the classic Little Black Dress. We chose a Kensie LBD that incorporates one of winter’s biggest trends—lace. Pairing black with lace makes your outfit instantly glam.

Next, we added a pop of color. Hue’s Classic Ribbed Tights in a gorgeous crimson shade add an unexpectedly fun touch to the outfit. They work perfectly with the Naya Jada pump; we love the opening in the front of the shoe as it showcases the tights’ funky color.

It’s important to keep the accessories understated with this look—we chose a great black clutch by Tory Burch and a classic gold watch by Michael Kors.

With this glamorous look, 2012 just might be your best year yet!

How Do You Naya? Resolve to be Environmentally Thoughtful in 2012

It’s that time of year again! The holidays provide a moment to pause and reflect on 2011’s accomplishments, renew your mind, body and spirit and set new goals to make 2012 an even more productive and joyful year.

When drafting your New Year’s resolutions, choose a goal that’s good for both you and the planet this year. Set yourself up for success by finding an eco-friendly promise that you’ll actually keep!

Here are 5 easy ways to leave a softer footprint on our earth this year.

1. Update your cosmetic bag

Rotate eco-friendly options into your regular makeup rotation. Check out model and eco-entrepreneur Josie Maran’s cosmetic line – full of luxurious products that are pure, gentle, nontoxic and eco-friendly. (www.josiemarancosmetics.com)

2. Tweak the energy efficiency of your home

The U.S. Department of Energy’s energysavers.gov site gives step-by-step instructions on conducting a home-energy assessment and shows how a few easy changes—closing the fireplace damper, lowering the hot-water heater to 120 degrees—can save water, energy and dollars.

3. Makeover your wardrobe

Give your closet an eco-makeover and shop second hand whenever possible. Pare down your wardrobe by donating what you haven’t worn in the last year. Donate those back-of-the-closet shoes you never wear to Naya’s Renew Your Soles program. When you donate a pair of gently worn shoes, receive $20 off an $80 purchase at shoes.com. (blog.nayashoes.com/renew-your-soles)

4. Eliminate trash by reusing your flatware

Reduce your “forkprint” and avoid disposable plastic utensils during your next desktop lunch. An easy fix: keep your flatware at your desk, like To-Go Ware’s bamboo utensil set with a handy storage pouch. (to-goware.com)

5. Filter the junk

Each year the average U.S. home receives 1.5 trees' worth of junk mail—mostly unopened credit card offers, solicitations, and catalogs that just end up in the trash. Avoid adding to our landfills by registering to block your junk mail at dmachoice.org.

What to Wear Wednesday: Holiday Get-Together

The holidays have arrived — bringing with them family, food, tradition and (hopefully) a chance to relax. But just because you’re relaxing doesn’t mean you can’t be fashionable while you do it. So toss the sweatpants aside and try this week’s look for a cute and comfortable option that will have you ready for any holiday festivities.

A great pair of leggings is the staple of every winter wardrobe. Pair them with a tunic-style sweater and — ta-dah! A look that’s simultaneously chic and comfortable. We chose Vince’s heathered knit leggings with a cream boatneck tunic sweater by Trouvé.

When it comes to footwear, a versatile boot is your best friend when temperatures drop. The Quail boot adds a sophisticated edge to the ensemble with its charming details and vintage look. Eat, drink, be merry! These boots will keep you cozy and stylish throughout the day.

Add a touch of holiday sparkle to your outfit with a fun pair of earrings! We love the cheeky bow detail on this glass pearl pair by Kate Spade.

Finally, store all your holiday survival supplies in a tasteful tote. This convertible crossbody by Marc Jacobs leaves your arms free to carry all of your gifts while holiday shopping. Now that you’re ready to celebrate in comfort and style, time to get started on those last-minute gifts!

How Do You Naya? Holiday Travel Tips from Kim Groomes

For this week’s How Do You Naya, we asked our resident style and beauty expert Kim Groomes for her best holiday travel tips.

You know that anxiety people are prone to get when about to take the stage for a big speech? Or right before standing up to a rude cashier? That’s not the kind of anxiety I get. Speech-giving, piece-of-my-mind-giving, that’s all fine with me.

My problem is, I’m an anxious packer. But a bad packer? No way.

The holidays are just around the corner, which means a few things. One: FOOD. Two: More food. And three, you’re probably traveling – near or far – to spend time with your loved ones. We have to get you ready! That suitcase is calling your name.

But before I get into the tips, let me start by saying that this is not one of those posts in which I’m going to school you on how to re-wear the same outfit three times. I’m just not a fan of sacrificing style for bag space. Trust me, you can make it work and still be the hot fashionista that you are year-round. And now, for some tips that have helped this self-proclaimed “anxious-packer” relax just a bit.

1. Be realistic with your “comfy clothes:” And by comfy, I mean yoga pants, sleeping T-shirts, undergarments. No, you do not need four sleeping shirts for a week’s trip. Try two!

2. Don’t lie to yourself: Come on, are you really planning on exercising on your holiday trip? I am famous for packing my tennis shoes and racer back tanks only to have them sit undisturbed in my suitcase until it comes time to leave. Unless you’re in marathon-training mode, why not forget the workout clothes and RELAX? Plus, it saves suitcase space.

3. Multipurpose packing: You can cut back on the number of clothes items by packing multipurpose clothing. For example, include items that can both be worn during the day and as lounge wear. I’ve got a cute three-quarter length knit top that I can wear for a lounge day around the house or with jeans and a blazer out to the movies.

4. Clothes first, shoes later: Depending upon the time of travel, pick out 4-6 amazing outfits that you look and feel good wearing. Make sure to plan for the jewelry and leg wear as well! Then, go for the shoes. Ideally, you’d be able to wear a shoe with at least two or three of those outfits or variations of them. If you’ve picked an outfit that requires one specific shoe that can’t be worn elsewhere, toss it (Gasp! I know – even if it’s cute, we must be practical).

5. The three-second rule: As I’m packing, I literally move item by item through my closet. When I see something I like and want to pack, it’s pulled immediately. But sometimes, I’ll grab something out, look at it, turn my head sideways, hold it up in the mirror, etc. “I just might need this.” “But it’s sooo cute!” I go right ahead and pack it only to never wear it. Ever have one of those moments? That’s where my three-second rule comes in. If you have to ponder, leave it behind!

6. The go-to shoe: Everyone’s got to have one. And unless you’re reading this post in Hawaii, I’m thinking most of you need to set your sights on a great boot. My boot of choice this winter? Naya’s Quail. I literally cannot tell you how much use this lovely boot has gotten. It is the quintessential airport shoe – so comfortable and still classy. And it’s multi-functional (see point #3)! I’ve worn my bordo Quail over jeans with a T-shirt, dressed up with tights and a dress – you name it. And always, the compliments pour in.

So, you’re all set, right?! Well, your suitcase is ready. You may still need a bit more time to bake those seven pies you accidentally agreed to bring this year.

Enjoy your holiday travels!

What to Wear Wednesday: Classic Cocktail

Your calendar is filling up with festive parties and happy hours, but what will you wear? We have your wardrobe covered this week with a classic cocktail look.

Start with a timeless shift dress in a wintry shade. We chose a gossamer gray piece from Madewell for its subtle sheen and party-worthy cut. A skinny black belt adds shape and modern styling.

Next we moved to the shoes. The Dalia boot from Naya shoes in black leather lends luxury to the look with its elegant shape and adornments. Ornate buttons and rich draping set off these pretty statement boots. Who says prim and proper has to be boring?

No holiday look is complete without some sparkle! Dress up your ensemble with jewels, crystals and rhinestones. We chose a luxe necklace from Aldo.

Finally, pull your look together with a pretty manicure. Add a swipe of color with a bright red polish, like Jelly Apple by Essie.
